Australian Dollar Task
Hi everyone,
Suitable for Grades 5/6, the Australian Dollar Task involves money, multiplication, decimals and ordinal numbers. This task involves students exploring different currencies around the world and the fact that $1000 Australian dollars doesn’t equal $1000 in other countries, particularly in places like Indonesia and Malaysia. The URL for the following exchange rate calculator: http://currencies.news.com.au/converter.asp is listed on the worksheet for students to use. Tasks 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9 involve students using multiplication to explore the cost of different items.
I believe it’s necessary to have thoroughly covered multiplication before starting this activity. My Grade 5/6 students are currently completing this activity and most are handling the multiplication component quite well. I hope this activity finds a place in your Mathematics program.
