Lou isn't aspirational, but her heart is in the right place—she's trying. She's trying to get away from her father, a crime lord. She's trying to save her sister, who's in an abusive relationship. And, when she finally meets a partner who fills the empty void in her heart, she tries to do whatever she can to protect her. But in achieving these goals, she makes some poor decisions. She also smokes (pot and cigarettes) and obtains and distributes an illegal drug. Jackie is sympathetic and independent, and she perseveres, but she's definitely not a role model, given her decisions and actions.

Diverse Representations

This is a queer love story from female filmmakers that stars lesbian actors. Atypical-for-Hollywood depictions of women include bodybuilders and a woman who does maintenance work. Co-lead is Black, as is the lead FBI investigator. A corrupt cop is played by an actor of color, and there are a couple of Latino actors in minor supporting roles. But while the story takes place in New Mexico, there are almost no Native American actors with speaking roles.

Gun running and a shooting range are part of the plot, and guns are everywhere. People are shot, sometimes fatally, and wounds are seen. There are also brutal beatings with grotesque wounds, chunky blood, and mangled faces. Creepy, unsettling scene involving vomiting. Insects crawling everywhere. Strangling. While the act doesn't happen on camera, a victim of domestic violence is shown with shocking contusions. Lead characters are in peril.
